The Fiscal Realities of the Jones Library Renovation and Expansion Project

Monday, November 13, 2023

Today, the Amherst Current debuts a regular column, Keeping Up with the Jones. Our intent is to provide updates about the status of the Jones Library Renovation and Expansion regularly to readers of the Current.

In this edition, Capital Campaign Manager Ginny Hamilton discusses key financial issues for the Amherst Town Council's discussion and eventual vote whether to increase the borrowing limit for the building project. Highlights include:

  • 84% of project costs have been secured through a mix of public and private funding sources
  • The Town of Amherst's share, $15.8 million, has not changed and will not change, despite cost increases
  • The Library and Town would forfeit $23M in outside funding if the project does not proceed

‍Established in July 2021 and revived in November 2023, the Amherst Current aims to serve as a trusted source for perspective and analysis about big topics that impact the Amherst community and its future.
